<OT> Linda, that definitely is a well-publicized telecom scam going around...it all lays out exactly as you said. Had you given them your cc number, you would have been subsidizing some international calls to who-knows-where within minutes.

What these people do, from what I've read, once you give him your number as he requests...is immediately call a friend "on the street corner" in some major city (NYC/Miami are well known for this scam), who has people standing in line to make FLAT-RATE international calls for, oh, say $5 (what a deal for the caller, eh ?), and they start using your cc number until the long distance company security algorithms sense the unusual calling pattern and block out the card - if it catches it. I've heard of some monstrous bills arriving to some unsuspecting parties when this problem went unhindered until the next-month's bill. Ouch. I don't recall who is liable for this fraudulent calling BTW.

My ld company calling card used to, by design, prevent me from using it in NY state and FL state for these exact reasons when I was traveling...I had to call in to the ld operator personally call by call (real pain) because of the rampant telecom fraud in these two states (kind of usurped the reason for a calling card, eh ?). But they had lost mega-bucks to these two states at the time through fraud (more typically where the people stands behind you when you key in your card at a public pay phone...writes down your sequence, and gets your card number).

Good to see you intuitively sensed trouble.
