Linda,

Techtool from Micromat Systems will do Norton-type diagnosis and repair of HFS+ volumes. It is able to diagnose nearly every part of a system, hardware and software.

Best wishes,
John

Speaking of Norton Utilities, I noticed that it doesn't work on the Extended HFS filing system. Is there anything that does work to keep it cleaned up other than Disk First Aid?

As already noted, TechTool Pro 2 will do this. Although MicroMat has had some kinks to work out of the early releases, I haven't heard of any problems with the latest updates. Best place to watch for advice/trouble with these utilities is MacFixIt (http://www.macfixit.pair.com/), it has a decent search engine too. Norton Utilities is another issue altogether. I can't believe they are so far behind with HFS+ compatibility. It's not like Symantec didn't have access to the first iterations of HFS+ 8 months ago with seeds of Mac OS 8.1 and developer access to the Sequoia specs...
