To All: Shakepeare would have said:"Much Ado About Nothing"
It appears that Ziff did some research after screaming that MSFT was going to ruinn the marketplace and came up with the following:
The Justice Department claims bundling Microsoft's Web browser
with its Windows operating system gives Microsoft an
insurmountable advantage.

Bill Gates disagrees.

What do the people say? At ZD Market Intelligence we just
completed our annual study of 12,000 U.S. households with PCs.
This projectable study has impeccable credentials for methodology
and objectivity, and we get detailed responses from end users. You
may be surprised by the data we surfaced on browser usage. (We
were.)

Bottom-line stats from end users show browser usage patterns are not
dominated by Microsoft. Overall, Netscape is still in the lead. But
the numbers get much more interesting: Of PC users with Windows
95, Netscape's Navigator/Communicator has a 52% to 46% lead
over Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Figuring there are Win95 users who bought their systems before IE
came bundled, we dug deeper, keying on customers who bought
new Win95-based systems in 1997. If IE dominates anywhere, we
expected it would be here. But after running the stats, it was clear
that even among these carefully segmented customers, IE does not
have dominant share. In fact it is less than 50%.
