Not my thread, simply my idea. Indeed it is to discuss all what you mentioned, including your initial comments, as it is part of te folklore of the sport. As an initial "forecast" (and bear in mind I have been out of the sport for eons of years, my ears do perk up every four years with the World Cup), I will venture to forecast the following results for the first four places. Brazil will repeat, defeating Germany (if I followed the right sequence of games) Italy will defeat the Netherlands for third place. So it will be a South American team amongst the 15 Europeans. The US seem to have a very good chance to go on to the following qualifying round, as in her group (Germany, Iran and Yugoslavia), I believe that Germany is the only strong contender, however Yugoslavia is by no means an easy team to beat, the weakest seem to be Iran, and then again no team can afford to take it for granted the effort needed to obtain victory. From that point my calculations put the US vs the Netherlands, and if the Netherlands have what they have demonstrated in the past, they will be very hard to beat. But who knows the US team may surprise many. As for the Mexican team (careful here, as marcos is liable to flame me if I do not say that Mexico will not win the cup). But even with such risk, Mexico faces the Netherlands, Belgium and Korea (south I think). Mexico has defeated Belgium in its past 2 encounters, so there should be no reason to beat them again, South Korea in theory should be no problem, but back in 66 the Koreans defeated (humiliated) the proud Italians with a nasty defeat, so who knows, still I give the Mexican team the benefit of the doubt., as for the Netherlands, that one is a tough one, the Mexicans will have to play an inspired game to beat the Dutch. In any event, They will make it to the second round, where they could meet with the Germans.... Now that is bad news, as the Germans hard a very strong team and I am putting the Germans in second place.... so that will be curtains for the Mexicans. The ARgentineans have always been strong contenders, and I think they will meet the Brazlians along the way, at which point I think the Brazilians will dominate. The new teams are a refreshing sight with this expanded tournament, Cameroon was a strong team the last time they showed up. The Saudis could be a surprise as they had a number of Brazilian trainers imported from Brazil, but that could also be old news. The Scotts have a new opportunity, same with the Chileans, both teams have been near fulfilled promises but never quite made it past the second or third round. France being the host country will have a better than average chance, however, if my calculations are correct, they will meet the Italians, at which point it will take a great effort and skill to beat the Azzurri, always a strong contender. A dark horse could be Paraguay, a South American team that won the most games (9), in their qualifying round, and finishing one point below the Argentineans. The above is a general and quick overview of the tournament as it gets ready to start (June 10). Now for some interesting "figures" see this:france98.com That is an estimated 37 billion "cumulative" viewers for the tournament, and for the Final alone: 1.7 billion viewers.... Interesting to know how much a 60 second advertising spot will cost the day of the final match. We will see how my predictions for the first 4 places turn out.... I will reserve the right to modify them as the tournament progresses, (or how bad they will look after the initial matches are over)....
