Sale of Viagra pills lures visitors to Andorra Tuesday May 26, 7:45 pm Eastern Time ANDORRA, May 26 (Reuters) - Authorities in Andorra have urged tighter controls by doctors prescribing the impotence pill Viagra to tourists who have flocked to the tiny principality in search of the new drug, officials said on Tuesday. Andorra, one of the few places in Europe where Viagra is readily available, has recently seen a steady stream of visitors who head straight for local pharmacies on arrival, hoping to buy the drug over the counter. They soon learn that a prescription is required before they can place their orders, and many end up at Andorran doctors' offices and clinics. Andorra's College of Physicians issued a written warning this week calling on doctors to conduct full medical checkups for anyone asking for Viagra and to make sure patients return for followup visits, a spokeswoman for the group said. ''The problem is that foreigners are coming to doctors' offices asking for prescriptions,'' the spokeswoman said. ''They are not residents and have no medical records here.'' Andorra, with a population of about 40,000, lies in the Pyrenees mountains on the border between Spain and France. The tiny republic of San Marino has also seen a flood of Viagra-seeking tourists, but most European governments are awaiting the outcome of tests by the London-based European Medicines Evaluation Agency before allowing it on the market. More than a million prescriptions have been written for Viagra, mostly to middle-aged men, since Pfizer Inc (PFE - news) introduced it in the United States last month in a blaze of publicity.
