Raising the sweet spot on storage servers.

Storage Computer Corporation Doubles Capacity in Storage Servers

Company's New 18GB Drives Improve OmniRAID Performance

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1998--Storage Computer Corporation (AMEX:SOS - news), a leading worldwide provider of high-performance storage systems, today announced that it is now shipping 18 gigabyte disk drives in the company's StorageSuite(tm) product line. The larger capacity drives effectively double the capacity of the current product in the same footprint of floor space and improve performance over the previous 9 GB drives.

With corporations staking their futures on information-intensive applications like data warehousing, Internet-based commerce, document processing, and teleconferencing, the ability to manage and store the data in the most efficient and effective way will be the solution of choice. For applications moving to incorporate imaging, video, multimedia and simulation and modeling, now more than ever storage requirements must address the scalability, flexibility and availability of these mission-critical applications.

''Our intelligent software-driven storage architecture has completely captured the commodity wave of the disk drive industry. Each new 3.5'' drive has re-invented our storage servers from their original 48GB design to over 870GB today with more to come,'' states Ted Goodlander, president and CEO of Storage Computer. ''The 18 GB drive is the fifth generation of 7,200 RPM drive technology, preceded by 2, 4 and 9GB drives, historically doubling every 18 months. By providing storage solutions which allow easy upgrade to newer, larger capacity disk drives without replacing the storage controller, current customers are able to migrate their existing systems to the larger capacity drives, protect their investment, and not sacrifice performance.''

These 18GB drives have undergone extensive reliability testing and will be incorporated into all models of the Company's StorageSuite product line including the Series:70 Desktop Storage Server, Series:71 Storage Server, Series:72 OmniRAID Server, Series:73 OmniRAID SuperServer(tm) and Series:74 OmniRAID SuperServer/ES.

''Companies are in search of greater capacity and functionality, while at the same time looking to protect their current IT investments,'' explains John Webster, Director, Management Strategies at The Yankee Group. ''By doubling disk capacity to 18GB drives into the StorageSuite product line, Storage Computer has demonstrated their commitment to the industry by expanding their high-end storage solution without hampering the performance of the environment.''

Storage Computer's Virtual Storage Architecture transforms discrete arrays of commodity disks into a single, large pool of centrally managed ''virtual storage'' which increases the percentage of usable capacity delivered to the user and application. The Company's OmniRAID(tm) software allows data protection levels to be applied to the data rather than to the array itself, maximizing storage efficiency, while reducing the total amount of storage required.

''The customer is now in a win-win situation...not only can they take advantage of high capacity disk drives at lower market costs, they get more usable capacity through the combined Virtual Storage Architecture and OmniRAID technology,'' concludes Mr. Goodlander.

Pricing and Availability

U.S. list price of these products range from approximately $60,000 to $650,000. The largest configuration prices out at approximately $0.67/MB compared to $1.20 /MB using 9 GB drives. Upgrade costs are configuration dependent.
