I hope no one minds a little speculation. I want to speculate/fantasize about an Exxon buyout. According to Exxon's 10-Q filed May 13, 1998:

Shares outstanding - 2,446,791,735 (that's 2.4 BILLION)
Shares in treasury - 537,000,000 (that's 537 million)

As near as I can tell we have about 40 million fully diluted shares. If Exxon were to say "We'll give you one for one with our stock" it would only dilute them 1.6% and only cost them 7.4% of their treasury stock, no cash. Exxon is selling for $70.56 per share. Dilution could drop their price to $69.43 but the news about what they just purchased would easily move it back up, quite possibly much higher.

Come on Exxon, make my day.
