I can't argue with the numbers in that article. However, console games, IMO, cannot compete with the graphical feasts in games like Quake II or Unreal (which I just picked up and is awesome). Not to mention the depth of play in PC strategy or RPG games.

The pace of improvement in 3D accelerator cards will continue to blow consoles away. In fact, the latest Intel processor just barely feeds a 3Dfx Voodoo II enough information to max out it's performance. Anything less and you're frame rate suffers. Intel knows this, which is why they are building 3D specific instructions into the microprocessor.

So I think PC games should be a very significant driving force for upgrades. Looking out over the next year, a 300+ MHz machine with 64-128MB memory and a 12MB 3D card would work just fine. Wanna play, gotta pay.
