3Com report from the Frys Electronics & the Staples Stationary Store...

Last weekend I visited Frys Electronics & Staples Stationary store. I pretended to be a customer shopping for 56K modem & Palm3.

3Com Modems:
The sales representative told me that 3Com modems (internal, external & PC card) are moving faster than any other brand and volumes are slowly picking up. Most of his customers prefer 3Com modems over Best Data. He talked very highly about 3Com quality and tech support. He advised me not to buy 56Kfelx modem as they are difficult to upgrade. The modems were priced from $109 to $229. The Best Data was 3 - 5% cheaper than 3Com. He tried to convinced me that 3Com modems are worth the premium.

There were lots of 28.8 modems on the shelf. The average price was $29.99.

Palm 3:

Palm3 looks very slick. I had to stand in line to get a demo. The sales representative told me that his store sells about 1000 units per month. His supervisor told me that Frys in Bay area sell about 6K to 8K Palm3 & Palm Pilot Professional every month. He told Palms are very popular and there is hardly any return.

I think the Palm3 was going for $369 & the Palm Pilot Professional (with lesser memory) was $259.

I asked him to show me Windows CE Palm PC (?). He did show me one from HP that was selling for $799. He told me that the volumes on Palm's are much higher than HP's Palm PC.

I heard similar story from a guy from the Staple Stationary store.

>>what would a usrx computer be like?<<

You forgot about the monthly software upgrades,
no chip upgrades needed....

Looks like COMS is starting to take a nap. I predict
it will wake up at around 3:00.

Note how the Nasdaq and the DOW are very similar -
I interpret this as program trading.

30-year bond at 5.84; comforting

I predict COMS ends at 28 +- 1/8
today. Anybody else have some guesses?
(this is supposed to be a fun exercise to
kill this low volume boredom...:?)
