I think there are a couple of reasons why the Barron's article says something different from the "Dell publicized view."

1. Barron's is only including the high-margin systems (Servers and W/S) as someone else pointed out.

2. Companies like Dell like to call anyone who has put up a shingle and pays with a PO an enterprise. This includes my neighbor who buys a PC for home use but claims it on her "small business" account. It includes everyone who is running a SOHO. These customers are as price conscious as the "consumer" - after all the money is coming from the same pocket. That is the real business definition of a consumer v/s enterprise - the consumer pays for the object out of his own pocket. This includes small businesses, including those that have half a dozen PCs, and a LAN.

BTW, what Dell calls a $2500 workstation, can be had for $1600 from retail. Even large businesses are recognizing that. That is why companies like Ingram and CompUSA are building their own PCs and supplying them to all customers (consumers and enterprises).
