Y2k in The Rose Garden ...

President Clinton just gave a short speech about the State of the Economy, fairly rosy stuff... basic thrust had do with protecting social security. When he finished his prepared remarks, he took some questions.

The FIRST question was regarding his thoughts on Y2k.

He turned on his "determined" face and stated that the nations of the world (referring to the G8 conference) were taking this very seriously. He was very careful not to appear in a panic mode but he did say that "all americans who are listening to my words" should commit to taking responsiblity for solving this problem as it will effect ALL US businesses (a fairly interesting and telling appeal).

President Clinton closed by saying if we did the hard work now we could avoid a Y2k "headache" at the turn of the century ....

Steve, calm down a bit. I think a little perspective is in order. Douglas clearly is informed about Y2K. And since he reads this thread he is obviously more informed than most (gg).

When one, such as you and I and the rest of this thread, are among the first to recognize a problem, we tend to sound like zealots simply because we are forced to say the same things over and over again and explain ourselves in great detail just to avoid sounding a bit loony. But once the "average" person is better informed on Y2K, we can do away with the background stuff and cut to the chase. Thus, in that sense -- perhaps -- as we get closer to 2000 there actually will be a decrease in the noise level, again, simply because there is little need for many of us to continue to stand on soap boxes and shout to be heard.

Does this diminish the problem? No. It merely refocuses our efforts from talking about it to doing something about it. I have faith in humanity that if things are nearing a crisis state in late '99, rather than building fox holes and fences we will all be pooling resources to help our respective countries get through it. But, hey, having some cash on hand and a few cases of bottled water couldn't hurt (gg).
