Geoworks Ports Operating System to ARM Chips, Providing
Easy Java Technology-Based Solution for Smart Phone
Manufacturers
Relationship With Key Chip Designer Gives Wireless Handset Manufacturers
An Optimized Java(TM) Solution With Minimized Time to Market
ALAMEDA, Calif., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Geoworks Corporation (Nasdaq: GWRX - news), a
leading provider of smart phone solutions, has ported its GEOS(R)-SC(TM) operating system that
includes Sun Microsystems' PersonalJava(TM) to chips designed by ARM (LSE: ARM; Nasdaq:
ARMHY). This highly integrated solution now gives wireless handset manufacturers the ability to
rapidly enter the emerging smart phone market, and provides new market opportunities for the more
than 750,000 developers creating Java(TM) applications worldwide.
Geoworks implemented the PersonalJava platform on its innovative operating system to provide an
easy Java software solution for manufacturers of mobile communications devices. By porting this OS
to ARM chips, the preferred microprocessor in the European handset market, Geoworks has
provided original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) using any one of ARM's 26 chip licensees with
the ability to quickly bring to market a Java solution for a wide range of smart phones.
''Geoworks is a leader in the smart phone industry, and we are pleased that it has ported its
operating system to the ARM Architecture,'' said Rod Crawford, ARM's director of 3rd Party
Software Products. ''This combination creates a compelling solution for Java-capable ARM
Powered smart phones.''
Geoworks has optimized its implementation of PersonalJava for resource-constrained devices,
including smart phones. Geoworks has developed smart phone application programming interfaces
(APIs) in the Java language for rich telephony functionality. Java applications can now be adapted to
run on devices utilizing the GEOS-SC operating system.
''By implementing the PersonalJava platform on its operating system, Geoworks is helping to create
new opportunities for Java applications in the growing smart phone market,'' said Jonathan Schwartz,
director of software products at Sun Microsystems' Java Software division. ''Java technology
developers can leverage the 'Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)' capabilities of the Java platform by
enabling their applications to run on mobile communications devices.''
''ARM chips are a leading choice for smart phone manufacturers, so being able to run on ARM is very important to our continued success in this market,'' said David Thatcher, Geoworks' president.
''We value Sun's efforts to establish Java as a standard so that developers can write applications that can run across many platforms, including GEOS-SC. We are pleased that we can now offer a Java
solution for manufacturers who choose the ARM chip design.''

ERICSSON ON SILICON VALLEY ACQUISITION PATH:::
The Canberra Times
May 25, 1998, Monday Edition
ERICSSON SEES MARRIAGE OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS, DATA;
FIRM ON ACQUISITION PATH; MIKE TAYLOR; TELECOMMUNICATIONS

AÿAÿAÿ International telecommunications giant, Ericsson, is preparing itself for the eventual convergence of the telecommunications and data communications industry, according to the company's new president and chief executive officer, Sven- Christer Nilsson.

What is more, Ericsson has signalled its intention to both acquire and partner companies capable of assisting in such a convergence.

Mr Nilsson who is currently undertaking a tour of Ericsson's global assets told a conference in Melbourne last week that with the expanding range of new technologies, Ericsson needed to be prepared for the convergence of telecommunications and data.

He said the lowering of costs for moving data over a network, due to the rapid growth of the internet, was bringing about fundamental changes in communications infrastructure.

"We're transitioning from a network that today is optimised for voice communications to a network optimised for data. The transformation will be one of the most significant technological shifts in the history of telecommunications and Ericsson is uniquely positioned to prosper in that new environment," Mr Nilsson said.

He said that through a combination of organic growth, selected acquisitions and partnerships with independent companies, Ericsson was focused on becoming a full service provider to the newly converged industry.

"Ericsson has the technology, expertise and customer relationships to meet the needs of the new developing marketplace," Mr Nilsson said. "Our long heritage has proven our unique capabilities to manage large and complex projects which affect the global marketplace." He said Ericsson had identified the key to managing the new converged industries as building a new and stronger portfolio of dynamic products and services for customers.

Mr Nilsson said the next stage of Ericsson's growth worldwide, would include the acquisition of selected companies and/or partnerships with companies that offered such complementary products and services.

"Our strategy is to enhance our ability to partner with companies in this new world and provide our customers with the best possible service into and throughout the next millennium," he said.

Mr Nilsson said Ericsson was committed to maintaining and strengthening its presence in Australia and believed Australia was well poised to continue its leadership in the global telecommunications industry."
