Subject: A New York City police officer is shot in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY, May 26 - A New York City police officer is in critical condition after he was shot while in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani identified the officer as Anthony Mossomillo, 36. Mossomillo was executing a warrant at 523 East 34th St. in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, when he was shot at 8:04 a.m. The officer was shot twice in the neck, and underwent surgery at Kings County Hospital. Mossomillo is a 14-year veteran of the New York Police Department. He lives in Glendale, Queens, has a wife and two children, and is fighting for his life.

"All of us are praying for him and hoping that he's able to make it. His family is with him," Giuliani said. The alleged perpetrator involved in the shoot-out was killed. Giuliani identified him as Joseph Serrano, 30, also known as Joseph Figueroa. "It turns out he was on parole. I don't know how much more often we're going to have to say that before the New York State Legislature does away with parole," the mayor said. Giuliani said Serrano used several aliases and served time for a drug conviction. Mossomillo and his partner, Miriam Sanchez-Torres, 36, went to Serrano's apartment to serve a warrant on Serrano for a misdemeanor drug charge. Serrano's girlfriend, Betsy Ramos, 33, let them into the apartment. According to the mayor, Serrano was hiding in a bedroom closet in the back of the apartment. Police Commissioner Howard Safir said investigators believe eight shots were fired but were still trying to reconstruct who fired which shots and whether Serrano had a gun with him or took a gun from one of the officers. Although Mossomillo had been wearing a
bulletproof vest, the gunshots struck him above it.

Neighbors said they were alarmed by the early morning gunfire, and said they were not accustomed to much crime in their neighborhood. "We heard a couple of gunshots, maybe four, then, all of a sudden, police, riot gear. Everyone was telling us to get back," said Karen Virgo. Police continued to assess the crime scene and would not remove Serrano's body until they discovered from where the shots originated. Meanwhile, Ramos was being questioned at the 67th Precinct.

During a statement to reporters, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani made a plea to end parole.
