Microsoft expects WebTV copycats

Microsoft Corp. is bullish on the prospects for WebTV, its device which puts the Internet on consumer television sets. In an interview with the
Mercury News, the senior vice president of Microsoft's consumer platforms division called sales to date of 350,000 units "a huge success."
Craig Mundie said the recent collapse of competitor NetChannel Inc. (whose assets were purchased by America Online) is no evidence the
product is a failure. "We're sort of at a momentary lull, where a whole bunch of little companies who either had a poor product concept or didn't
have a lot of staying power went through one phase of the shakeout," Mundie said. "Now, the concepts are being proven. I think you're going to
see an incredible number of people trying to copy WebTV conceptually and offer services like the WebTV service."
