Personal Health: Facing Viagra's Emotional Ripples

By JANE E. BRODY

With men and women from the Bob Doles on down extolling the virtues of Viagra, it is easy to lose sight of potential problems and limitations of the potency pill. Not the least of them is the fact that erectile dysfunction, as impotence is called medically, can often be more than just a physical matter, especially when it has persisted untreated for years.

Lovemaking involves -- or should involve -- far more than simply the brief union of two body parts and the release of sexual tension. Although Viagra can, in most cases, restore a man's physical ability to achieve such a union, it does nothing per se to reawaken sexual desire and foster communication and loving feelings between partners who may have long ago put these aside.

Men who are impotent often refrain from any physical or verbal expressions of tenderness and desire for fear of raising false hopes in their partners, who may do likewise to avoid inducing guilt in a man unable to perform sexually. Both may need to make changes in how they think and behave if their sexual interaction is to be anything more than physical.

Experts in human sexuality anticipate that many couples who fail to deal with the emotional aspects of sex made possible by Viagra will end up with conflicts that could seriously strain rather than solidify their relationships.
