Don't take it seriously on the insult front, I thought one good turn deserved another.
If you were on the Cairo team you probably saw me, I was working with Cutler on kernel debugger code first on the 860, then on MIPS and Alpha. I was a pretty heavy Unix bigot when I started that but cutler soon convinced me otherwise (or at least not to talk about it). When Allchin's team first got fired up we were all pretty suspicious that he was creating the programmer's full employment act, the mother of all programs that would never stop expanding, kind of like the expanding universe theory.
As for real innovation, I tend to agree with you, it's not in the culture - except for some of the business practices which are pretty inventive. But that's true for most of the big companies, certainly the database companies. Innovation is hard to foster when there is a lower risk path to the money, one needs to be a little hungry (and also visionary) to go outside the lines.

Dragonfly,
you wanna be careful. William might have eyes hunting for ex Softians. You shouldn't mention the building you were in. William has a grudge against you already, and he can track you down. The guy is a psycho :)
