Re: "ETEC released OK results today"

Yes, the earnings were $0.47 vs consensus estimate of $0.49. Not too bad.

Best wishes,

AMAT announces bad news too:

Applied Materials Announces Voluntary Separation Plan

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 26, 1998--Applied Materials, Inc. announced today
that it will implement a Voluntary Separation Plan (VSP) as part of its continuing efforts to reduce
costs as a result of continued cutbacks in capital equipment investment by semiconductor
manufacturers. This program will be offered in early June to employees on a selective basis, the
majority of whom are in Santa Clara and Austin, Texas. A package of separation pay and benefits will
be provided to eligible employees who choose to leave the Company under the VSP.

Although Applied Materials has implemented several cost reduction programs this year, continued
slowdown in demand requires the Company to decrease expenses further. As a result of this workforce
reduction, Applied Materials will incur a pre-tax restructuring charge currently estimated to be $25
million - $30 million, or approximately $0.05 per share after-tax, during its third fiscal quarter ending
July 26, 1998. This charge will primarily cover the cost of employee separation pay and benefits.

While the semiconductor industry is currently experiencing a slowdown in demand, Applied Materials
remains confident about the long-term business outlook for the industry and the Company. This press
release contains certain forward-looking statements, such as the estimated restructuring charge, that
are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially.

12/97-1/98 support levels:

A B C
klic 17 18.1 6
klac 34 35 3
amat 27 32.8 21
nvls 30 37.6 25
asmlf 30 41.5 38
intc 72 74.7 4

A=support
B=now
C= % above support now

There is an interesting divergence. In particular, klac and intc
are doing much worse, and asmlf much better, relative to their
peers, than I would have expected.
