Bema Gold Corporation Announces Positive Drilling Results Indicate
Potential To Increase Gold Reserves At Verde Deposit, Refugio Property

VANCOUVER, May 26 /CNW-PRN/ - Bema Gold Corporation (''the Company'') is
pleased to report encouraging results from the remainder of the first
phase of deep drilling beneath the Verde Deposit at the 50% owned
Refugio Mine in Northern Chile.

These new diamond drill assays combined with the first set of holes from
this program confirms that the Verde Deposit has the potential to
increase the amount of gold contained beyond the original 5.3 million
ounces defined independently by Mineral Resource Developments Inc.
(''MRDI'') of California.

The Verde Deposit extended base case pit as defined by MRDI in the Verde
Feasibility Study contained a mineable reserve of 185 million tonnes
grading 0.90 grams per tonne gold, containing 5.3 million ounces of
gold. At surface, the dimensions of the deposit are 1.4 kilometres long
by 0.7 kilometres wide. It is up to 280 metres deep in East Verde and
300 metres deep in West Verde. The Verde Deposit is currently being
mined at the rate of approximately 30,000 tonnes per day and
approximately 500,000 ounces of the reserve have been mined to date.

In addition to testing the potential for additional reserves at depth,
the current program will provide material for further metallurgical test
work and bring some possible reserves in the extended base case pit (21%
of the total reserve) into the proven and probable categories.

The Bema exploration group, along with Amax Gold Inc. and the Compania
Minera Maricunga mine staff are working together to update the reserves
and geological resources based on the recent program. A decision on
further drilling will be made when the reserve and resource update is
completed.

Bema Gold Corporation produces gold in Chile, and through its
affiliates, explores for gold in Argentina, Canada, Chile, the United
States, and Venezuela. The common shares of the Company are listed for
trading in Canada on The Toronto Stock Exchange, and the Vancouver Stock
Exchange and in the United States on the American Stock Exchange under
the symbol ''BGO''.

PLACER DOME FORECASTS GOLD BOOM

Bill Hayes, President of Placer Dome Latin America, yesterday predicted
that Latin America could be enjoying a "gold boom" within two or three
years because of its rich mineral deposits and political stability.

Although gold prices are currently low, Placer Dome will be investing
one third of its world-wide exploration budget in Chile, or about U$45
million, he said. Hayes also predicted that gold prices will eventually
rise back to its traditional benchmark level of US$400 per ounce.

In Chile Placer Dome owns a 51 percent interest in Cerro Cassal, as well
as the Can Can and La Coipa deposits. It also owns a 50 percent interest
in the Zaldivar mine.
