The real question is: can more than one company produce efficiently in the PC OS market, or will competition inevitably drive the number of competitors down to one, which will restrict output and sell at above competitive prices?

It's very clear to me that it's natural to have a dominent OS. The overall cost savings are enormous (the cost of the OS itself is a trivial expense). But there will always be multiple OSes around, since the dominent OS can't satisfy every niche.

The current supplier of the dominent OS has the best chance of supplying the OS in the future, but it is not immune from market forces. If the firm fails in a major way to respond to technology shifts and consumer tastes, it will be replaced.
