John, the listed debentures trade like stocks on the Nasdaq or NYSE bond exchange.. I have done quite well with convertible debentures.
Assuming a company is still around you get your $1000 back when the debenture matures (E.G ABC comp 8%of01 would be an 8% payment maturing in 2001(you need to dig a little deeper for the exact month and date)....
Investors Bus daily has a pretty good conv bond summary, also this thread is a little stale but there is some useful info. Good Investing.
