Here are some historical prices for Microsoft software, according to the company: Operating System Windows 3.1, which also required a copy of DOS: $77.95 for DOS 6.2, and $79.95 for Windows, for a total of $157.90. Windows 95: $109. Windows 98: $109. Major Software Programs In 1990, a single major software application, such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel, cost $399. Today, the company sells its Office Standard suite with five such applications for $499. Owners of earlier versions of those programs or competitors' products can buy the five-program package for $209. Minor Software Programs In 1993, the company's Encarta encyclopedia cost $249.
