Hello Peter V:
Australia is a major producer of diamonds, too. A Japanese firm (I think I could look it up if there is interest) has been making 1 carat gem grade diamonds for a couple of years. Certain useful qualities of diamonds are improved by making isotopically pure crystals. A few years ago the cost was still higher than mined diamonds, but was below historically high investment grade diamonds--during the collecting mania of the last decade or so. Assuming production costs continue to decline, there should be some further intrigues in the diamond markets. In general, when the dopes aren't running deals, the Russians have shown themselves to be astute traders (in their Soviet past). International economic risk is now more of a factor that could develop some erosive tooth to the US equities markets. I think in general the effects will be healthy--to more quickly approach reasonable valuations for equities, the unusually extreme dislocation of which makes this and related threads straightforward commentary.
Best regards,
m
