<Traders said they saw some institutional investors putting cash to work, snapping up discounted shares, particularly technology issues.

''I saw a lot of institutions that saw these declines in certain stocks and were coming in to buy them,'' said James Volk, co-director of institutional trading at D.A. Davidson and Co.

In addition to the computer-driven buy programs, traders said there was likely some short covering fueling the rebound. But they said they still expected further volatility in Wall Street stocks given the turmoil in overseas markets.>
