That was only an excerpt of the article but what you say makes sense. Even according to the rock museum in Phoenix they talk about the gold that is contained within the black sands in Az.

One of the things that amazed me when i was walking around the desert was the unbelievable IMO amount of pyrite that is located there. I have heard of many things that the dirt companies have experimented with as far as possible extraction methods and bio-oxidation was not among them. I am curious as to why not. I suppose if the metals can be leached and then subsequently extracted from the solution via resins then I would be happy with that. From my experience I believe that the efficiency of the resins would be too close to 100% to even worry about any deviations but I am also interested in what the efficiency of the leach is.

I have had a small fetish about bio technology as it relates to mining ever since I discovered that Newmont was using it on their refractory ores at Carlin Trend. I don't feel like going back and rereading it right now but I believe they did talk about sulfides in their ore.
