BETHESDA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 1998--Recent investor focus on biotechnology companies involved in potential cancer cures obscure perhaps better current opportunities available in other biotechnology stocks, a prominent industry researcher said today.

Arrow cites wound healing as a biotech sector under-appreciated by investors. Two companies, for example, Organogenesis (AMEX:ORG) and Advanced Tissue Sciences (NASDAQ:ATIS), are manufacturing artificial skin that have market opportunities in treating chronic skin ulcers and burns, among other uses. Each has at least one product already approved by the FDA and other treatments are under development.
Another company, Closure Medical (NASDAQ:CLSR), has developed a safe and effective alternative to topical sutures used in the closure of certain incisions and lacerations. Sealants are sometimes preferable to sutures because they work faster, don't involve needles and don't require a second visit to remove sutures, Arrow said. Fewer visits mean lower costs.
Biologically-engineered interior wound surgical sealants is another biotech area that holds promise, Arrow said. Focal, Inc. (NASDAQ:FOCL), for example, is developing products for use inside the body with or without sutures and staples to seal leaks resulting from pulmonary surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal surgery.
Another sector underfollowed by the investment community, Arrow said, are companies providing biomedical research supplies/services. "Several of these companies are already profitable and don't have the FDA-related exposure most biotech companies face," Arrow said. BioSource (NASDAQ:BIOI) and Biosite Diagnostics (NASDAQ:BSTE) are two profitable companies in this sector that are already profitable, Arrow said.
Companies Arrow currently follows include Advanced Tissue Sciences Avigen (NASDAQ:AVGN), BioSource International, Biosite Diagnostics, Gentle Dental Service Corp. (NASDAQ:GNTL), I-Flow (NASDAQ:IFLO), Integra LifeSciences, Life Medical Sciences (NASDAQ:CHAI), Ortec International (NASDAQ:ORTC), Vista Medical Technologies (NASDAQ:VMTI) and Zevex International (AMEX:ZVX).
