You mean like when Orcl made a similar product as R* - developed at IBM Santa Theresa, the first relational database - which eventually eclipsed the original?

And are you referring to the terrible tactic of hiring away the "creator company" development team, like Oracle did (or tried to do) 15 years ago?

That is always possible in any industry. Do you think all of Danielle Steele's novels are original plots. It is all in how you present the product and how well you market it. The Rolls is definitely a fine motor car but the richest motor car manufacturers are people who fill a need at the right price and market like crazy. The L1011 was a superior jet liner to all competing models at the time it was introduced yet it was a commercial flop.
