Lukoil to Expand in U.S. Market

by Jean Eckhoff

ON THE RIGA HIGHWAY, Russia (September 8, 1997)-- Russia's
biggest oil company, Lukoil, plans to invest in a network of service
stations in the United States. The company, which has opened four U.S.
stations since July, plans to open 25 to 30 by the end of this year,
according to a Reuters report.

In July, operators of its 50-percent-owned Texas affiliate Nexus Fuels
said the company has deals with four supermarket chains, giving it
access to 5,000 sites next door to supermarkets.

At a news conference held for the opening of a new filling station and
motel on a highway outside Moscow, Lukoil president Vagit Alekperov
announced plans to have 2,000 service stations worldwide by 2003.
"We intend to invest $240 million in the U.S. by the year 2001,"
Alekperov said.

Lukoil already operates service stations in Poland, Turkey and the
former Soviet Baltic states, Belarus, Moldova and Azerbaijan.
