Eric,
For orcl to be the #2 software company in the world they have got to be smarter than you seem to think is necessary in your post.

MSFT has been doing that for years. However, because of their vast resource and the leverage on the operating system they are able to come back

Right. Msft has made a few mistakes and recovered - you claim this is due to their O/S leverage. Well Orcl made a few mistakes and did not recover - and had about the same leverage. Look at the apps, when orcl lost mkt share there, orcl owned the engine! Talk about a competitive advantage! What happened there?

as far as I2 and MANU, they are based on totally different architecture. I don't see why Oracle wants to buy either one of them. A better strategy would be allowing I2/MANU to plug into Oracle apps and at the meantime develop their own.

You don't see why orcl would want either of them??? Based on their technical architecture?? Give me a break! Supply Chain is the hottest sector in applications today - growing well over 100%, and many, many customer care more about their SCM package than the ERP (check out Dell). Oracle does not have time to develop its own SCM solution - its as simple as that. By the time they finish, they will have a me-too product and I2 and Manu will have all the mkt share (if one of them isnt part of psft by then). If they had some brains over there at orcl they would take their devt and focus entirely on LOGISTICS - a totally untapped area - and develop something new that customers could use. Also, they would acquire one of the SCMs. Then orcl would be SUPERIOR to Sap,Psft and Baan and maybe they could win some business for a change!

People are blaming Netscape not following Yahoo's path based on solely the valuation of the two companies now.

Uh, who said anything about valuation? I didn't. Tell me honestly who has a clear business strategy and future - Nscp or Yahoo? Sure when nscp was the size of yhoo, its stock was hot, and the executives fell asleep! That was the problem! It was obvious they had an easy to develop commodity product which was going to get knocked off - did anybody think about that over there?
