"Handheld Computers Boom With PalmPilot Leading The Pack"

(05/27/98; 12:05 p.m. EST)
By Mitch Wagner, InternetWeek

Users bought 2.4 million handheld computers last year,
up 75 percent from the year before, according to a
study announced Monday by the Dataquest unit of
Gartner Group.

3Com's PalmPilot was the market leader, with 41
percent of the market, about 1 million units, up from
360,000 units in 1996.

Dataquest divided the handheld computer market into
two segments: the "standard handheld computer"
includes the PalmPilot and Windows CE devices,
where the vendor licenses technology to other hardware
manufacturers and encourages software developers to
write applications, and third-party hardware vendors to
develop peripherals.

The "expandable organizer" is a device where the user
can add applications and memory, but which is largely
proprietary to a single vendor. These include handheld
computers from Sharp.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com was the leader in
standard handhelds, with a 63 percent share, up from
about 52 percent in 1996.
