Bay Networks has announced that it has entered into a multi-pronged
agreement with Hayes that calls for Hayes to manufacture, market and
distribute Bay's LANcity LCP cable modem and future MCNS-compliant modems
on an OEM basis. The announcement also indicates that Bay and Hayes will
co-develop future generations of cable modems. The announcement did not
mention the future of Hayes' existing effort to develop and market a
MCNS-compliant cable modem based on Cisco's design.

The deal with Hayes provides Bay with its first solid retail channel.
Without a partnership with a strong retailer, Bay was destined to lose the
majority of its market share for subscriber units. Hayes was not so
desperate. While it would be interesting to learn, financial terms were
not disclosed.

Bay will continue to develop and market its proprietary and MCNS-compliant
CMTS solution.

In a separate announcement, Hayes reported that it would develop a
MCNS-compliant system with a USB interface. The news isn't startling,
considering that most cable modem suppliers plan to offer a USB interface
option, pending demand.

Zenith to File Chapter 11, Cable Modem Business For Sale
==============================================
Zenith Electronics has announced that it will file for Chapter 11
bankruptcy and will sell its cable modem business. In addition, Zenith
will become a wholly owned subsidiary of LG, a Korean firm that holds a 55%
interest in the company. Debts will be folded into LG stock. Zenith
stockholders will be screwed and won't benefit from the distribution.

Last week, Zenith announced that it would develop a MCNS-compliant cable
modem system. The announcement was most likely delivered so that the
business unit would be more attractive to potential buyers.
