Rude is not a bear. He is a CPQ devotee with a smaller
position in Dell. His arguments make the most sense as
he understands this business very very well. He is no
phony.

What advantages besides mind-share does CPQ have going forward??

CPQ has a dis-advantage going forward in the WinTel workstation
market. Intel has leveled the playing field once again and
Dell's business model will prevail. There will be no
difference from manufacturing and selling workstations as
in the current desktop model.

As for growth prospects and variables outside Dells control...
you must be fantasizing about proprietary architecture???

If you don't think the Wintel platform will dominate mid
to high end workstation applications then you don't understand
Intel and Microsoft's strategy very well (maybe you do, I'm
conjecturing for the sake of all here). About 70% of all
high end engineering apps have been succesfully ported to NT
with no performance degredation to similarly configured
UNIX workstations. All other vendors are moving aggressively
to this OS. In fact, they are now developing new releases on
NT and porting to UNIX!

UNIX is dead... I still like it though<gg>
