There is an underlying arrogance to this political witch hunt that has I think been little discussed.

There are over a billion Chinese. There is no reason to think they are culturally, genetically, or in any other way intelligence challenged.

Indeed, if the overseas Chinese can provide any indication, the reverse may well be true, and is increasingly likely to be unlocked as China moves to a more open, capitalistic and competitive social model.

As Maurice might put it, the billion plus Chinese are a lot of brain kilograms among which to choose. For national elite programs.

If the Chinese want to spend the money to have a full Russian level ICBM threat level against the US they can do so, and in fairly short order. Without Loral's or Hughes' or anyone else's help. (And I imagine they will do so, although they have not shown the same single minded urgency to move that project that the Russians did.)

I rather think we are better served by indicating to the Chinese that they can live very well with the US, and have much to gain by co-operating with us.

Of course we need to maintain a position of military strength, and the ability through our submerged islands of nuclear armageddon to absolutely annihilate any aggressor, but that is not I think in question.

We are not the only smart people in the world. Lets get real.
