Freeus, I don't think I can give you a proper answer, so I defer you to David Lawrence...he's good at this.

Dell has been very good to me also...it does help offset the disappointment.

What happened? I never thought USRobotics was just a modem company. I thought it was what the name was, the beginnings of a great robotics company

The name came from the Asimov book "I Robot". Sure U.S Robotics used robotic manufacturing equipment but I don't believe there was ever an intent to get into building robotic equipment.

Uhh, Freeus, I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but there were no robotics going on at Robotics. It was modems, remote access servers, handheld PIMs, and least known but most important, superior software engineering, which is why 3Com will wind up with the best client side V.90 modems.

Sorry, but no Asimov fodder in those hallways.
