What's going on with powerbook sales? I called MacZone, MacWarehouse, MacMall, Computerware, and the Apple Store today: 12" and 13" screens are backordered and 14" isn't expected til early-mid June! Jobs stated powerbooks were "available now" on May 6 -- this seems too reminiscent of the old Apple problems.

This is preferable than having a two months supply ready to go when new machines are announced, IMHO. Apple intentionally quit making all but the PB 1400 some six weeks before the May 6 announcement in order to clear the channel of older machines so they wouldn't have to cut prices to move them. I can only assume they then converted to making the G3 PowerBook series on the lines.

I think you'll find that many PC manufacturers have trouble keeping hot products in stocks, and by all accounts, these PowerBooks are selling like gangbusters. In the past I've heard of shortages with Toshiba, IBM, AST and others. Let's hope the delays aren't long, but they are to be expected.

Pixar uses 1,000 Sun stations

" Pixar is very dependent on Sun hardware for production,
according to comments in the annual report by Steve Jobs on the company's computer infrastructure ... :

"We dramatically expanded our computer infrastructure,
adding the latest server, storage networking and backup systems.

Our RenderFarm now uses over 1,000 of Sun's fastest processors; we have 5 terabytes (a terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes) of disk storage to hold our production data; and data now races through our studio over a gigabit network.
All our work is backed-up nightly, and copies are moved off-site, just in case.

It's one of the most impressive computer facilities around."

Mr Jobs should hire a mature , marketing savy CEO for AAPL .

Does anyone have any insight into backorder/delivery problems associated with OS 8.1 fully bootable CD. I've been using the updater (which is not bootable) because I have been unable to get delivery of the full-up-round from Apple for over 7 weeks, now. Has anyone else experienced this type problem recently?

Mike- Browser Advise for PowerBook

Mike, I am envious of your 14" 1024x768 screen!

I always use very high resolution on my crts, but I run the FONT SIZE up to 14pt.

This way the graphics are relatively small, so I can read more text on screen before scrolling. If you want, you can run the font size even higher. You can fool with the fonts, too.

Richard

Mike-i feel your pain. I finally located a 250/13.3" model here in NYC with help from people on this board. But, I have to tell you, I am annoyed at how long it is taking Apple to get these puppies out into circulatoin. I've been reading about these for many months prior to launch, and Apple knew they would be a hit so I don't know how they couldn't have been more prepared. I'm sure there are tons of reasons, but frankly they aren't good enough. Apple - you are developing a new product well in advance of it's launch, allowing ample pre-production and testing. You've had previous problems getting these things to consumers, and you need every profitable dollar you can get. Hello?

However, Mike, I can honestly tell you the new powerbooks are fabulous. Hold out and you will be happy you did. :)
