OPTUS NATURAL GAS DISTRIBUTION INCOME FUND ANNOUNCES 1998 FIRST QUARTER RESULTS

CALGARY, May 28 /CNW/ - OPTUS Natural Gas Distribution Income Fund
announced today that for the three-month period ended March 31, 1998 it had
revenues of $145.7 million and distributable income of $6.4 million. The total
distributions for the quarter were $0.50 per unit at an annual rate of $2.00
per unit.
OPTUS Natural Gas Distribution Income Fund is a Toronto Stock Exchange
listed (OPT.UN) income trust which through Direct Energy Marketing Limited is
Canada's largest independent natural gas marketing company, currently
distributing natural gas to approximately 500,000 residential and small
business customers in Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec. Direct Energy Marketing
Limited supplies approximately 750 MMcf of gas per day to industrial,
institutional and utility customers in North America. OPTUS has no external
term debt and a market capitalization of $250 million

HENRY SYKES JOINS GULF CANADA AS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL

DENVER, COLORADO, May 28 /CNW/ - Gulf Canada Resources Limited is pleased
to announce that Mr. Henry Sykes will join the Company as Senior Vice
President Business Development and General Counsel. Mr. Sykes will be based
in Calgary.
Mr. Sykes has practiced with the Calgary-based law firm Bennett Jones
Verchere for the past 15 years, primarily in the areas of mergers and
acquisitions, securities and corporate law. He received a Bachelor of Arts
degree from McGill University and a law degree from the University of Toronto.
''Henry has worked closely with Gulf for the past three years. He has an
excellent understanding of the company, many years of oil and gas experience
and demonstrated business acumen,'' said Richard Auchinleck, President and
Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Canada. ''He is a strong addition to our
