From what I asked Mory Ejabat at the annual meeting he indicated that they are working on a beefed up version of the GRF that "will work with existing routers" (and their flaws) and will be faster than the GSR12000 today. Its expected by Q1-Q2 1999. I was amused that LU specifically mentioned the compatibility with existing routers in their press release. GRF did not take off as well as expected because it expected the routers on the network to work perfectly. Looks like the Cisco routers had some glitches that prevented that. Whether the glitches were faulty design remnants or intentional (knowing Ciscos tactics I would go for the latter) they prevent newcomer equipment. But not for long because once others know they build around it.
I have said it again and again that Enterprise and Carriers are different in the way they buy equipment. Cisco's great marketing works at the Enterprise level but its performance and superior technology that wins at Carriers. Thats why the last 7 or 8 big ISP and Carrier deals were all Ascend wins. Cisco has not announced any major ATM switch win for the last 9 months. Getting a foothold into the next generation Internet Carriers is very important.
Mory Ejabat also stated openly that Cisco's WAN strategy is strange. They do not have one. They pitch end to end solution but its a slogan.
Ascend has no slogan but they deliver the products that handle all the layers, Edge, Access and the Core. And the products are the best by looking at the customer list that Ascend has he said.
