Ballmer sure of legal win

BOSTON--Microsoft Executive Vice President Steve Ballmer said yesterday that the software giant is not limiting access to the Internet and will win its legal battle with the government.

"I feel very confident that we will prevail," Ballmer told faculty and students at a Harvard University conference on the Internet via satellite.

The Justice Department and 20 states last week launched a landmark antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft, accusing theÿ

Redmond, Washington-based company of using its Windows operating system to seize control of the software market for browsers to access the Internet.

"In no way will our company restrict users' choice. Our products are open products that people can add value on quite widely, and we're very proud of that," Ballmer said.

Ballmer declined to lash back at competitors who have taken shots at Microsoft at the conference. Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said on Tuesday that Microsoft has "tacitly illegal" and "outrageous" measures to protect its dominance of the personal computer desktop, and Sun Microsystems Chief Executive Scott McNealy said that Microsoft has engaged in predatory pricing.

"Despite the fact that we've seen a tremendous explosion in the Internet, it's certainly not the case that opportunities have been shut down," Ballmer said.
