Telcos Focus on Future of DTV

A group of telcos has formed the Video Services Forum, an organization addressing the complex issue of moving DTV through broadband networks. The forum will gather for their first conference, Oct. 4-7 in Miami to focus on these and other DTV-related issues.

The conference, VidTrans '98 has chosen "Video Telecommunications in the Era of Digital Television" as its theme. Gathering on the eve of broadcasters' DTV rollout, the conference will include a mix of papers, tutorials, panels, case studies and other program elements to examine changing industry practices, the resulting demand for new services and the technologies that will underlie those services.

The forum is also an opportunity for the service providers to meet with vendors to work together towards solutions. A preliminary list of exhibitors looks like a who's who in the digital video industry: Artel, NDS, Scientific Atlanta and Video Products Group. Organizers expect 200-300 executives to attend this first conference of the forum. Event chairman is Bob Osborne, manager-video services, Bell South.
