At PC Expo '98 Box Hill Demonstrates Storage Area Network (SAN) Technology Using the Fibre Box*
Fibre Box(R) and SAN Allow for Improved Productivity In Business-critical Applications
NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- At this year's PC Expo, Box Hill Systems Corp. (NYSE: BXH - news) will demonstrate the advantages of the Storage Area Network (SAN) when using Box Hill's Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) RAID storage system, the Fibre Box(R). The Fibre Box(R) and the SAN provide improved fault-tolerance, flexibility and performance for data-intensive, business- critical applications. Box Hill, based in New York's Silicon Alley, is a leading worldwide supplier of high-speed enterprise storage and backup solutions.
''Until now, customers had to choose between the flexibility and fault- tolerance of distributed file systems like NFS and the higher performance of traditional channels like SCSI,'' said Ben Monderer, Box Hill's Chief Technology Officer. ''A Fibre Channel SAN, using Box Hill's Fibre Box(R) offers superior performance, flexibility, and fault-tolerance. Nothing is compromised. The bottom line is better productivity and less downtime for business-critical applications.''
About Box Hill's Fibre Box(R)
The Fibre Box(R) is a high-performance dual FC-AL controller-less RAID storage system with an unprecedented level of throughput accelerating any application requiring fast storage I/O. A mirrored Fibre Box(R) based solution eliminates the need for expensive external Fibre Channel RAID controllers. The result is a high performance, cost-effective RAID solution with increased uptime. The Fibre Box(R) also enables data transfer rates of up to 200 MB/s, transmission distances up to 10 km, up to 126 host/device connections and capacities of up to 2.27 TB. In the SAN environment, the Fibre Box(R) is managed by SANman(TM), Box Hill's SAN management software product suite.
About The SAN
The SAN is a Fibre Channel-based high-speed network that supports transfer speeds of up to 200 MB/s and cable lengths up to 10 km. The SAN provides multiple paths from the host/server to external storage systems, allowing information to be shared among various devices without affecting system performance or the Local Area Network (LAN). A SAN may be as simple as a dual arbitrated loop with up to 126 host/device connections, or scaled up to a fabric of switches with virtually unlimited nodes. In addition, by combining the best attributes of fast I/O channels and distributed file systems, the SAN provides improved fault-tolerance, flexibility, performance and system maintenance. The results are increased availability and greater productivity. The SAN is ideal for business-critical, data-intensive applications, such as data warehousing, Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), multimedia Internet/intranet Web servers, imaging, and video production.
