I think you've found one of the historic limitations of MS format - its limitation of 255 files in a folder. I use WOW Pro 5, not MS, but recall from my market research b/w the two that that was one of the distinctions. WOW has no such size limit. I believe there are ways around this, but suggest you check the MS threads or the downloader documentation. Good luck.

I'm not sure exactly what version of Metastock for Windows 95/NT it was but maybe 6.0, but Equis introduced the ability to have unlimited numbers of stocks and fixed the 255 problem.

Junnie...

Is there a particular reason you have decided to download in ASCII? I mean, can you not change this? Not knowing what all you're doing with the data, it would be hard to make specific suggestions.

I get my data each day in Metastock format. No conversion necessary. I also have built (a long time ago) about 30+ directories to store all this in. Given the limitation of 255 symbols in each dir, I've left plenty of room to add stuff in each directory. As Richard Estes points out elsewhere, MS people aren't sharing the "fix", so we're stuck with 255. But, it's not hard to work with.

There are certainly enough vendors out there who will feed you a format you can use without so much trouble. Seems to me...

Windows Explorer | View | Options | File Types allows you to change what file extensions are related to what programs. But I doubt this will solve the problem you are having as this will only affect what program is loaded if you double click on the file.

Sounds like your Metastock conversion program is not working correctly.

I've said it before, someday someone is going to create a data format designed to be used and everyone is going to standardize on it! Sometimes we are just stupid we keep using 8086 standards in computers and 255 metastock file formats in stock data.
