MikeM: A "gut" response FWIW

<<I think that Japan's exports to other Asian Tigers is small compared to the US market. I don't think Japan worries to much about exporting to other Tigers.>>

My "gut" tells me you are somewhat right on the first count and mistaken on the second one. If you run across some figures let me know. I will look also. A key point is that SE Asia has accounted for much of the growth rate experienced by Japan over the last few years prioir to the downturn here. Japan goods are heavily favored here. All the brands you are familiar with and then some. The question I have, however, is whether these goods are export or not. So many of them are manufactured here. I cannot think of a major Japanese Kareitsu that does not have several large facilities here in Malaysia alone. In consumer electronics they are clearly the leaders and they must have a goodly share of the automobile maket (though again I have no figures and base this on the cars I see on the road).

<<I don't believe Japan has a large manufacturing presence, if any, in China.>>

I again have a gut reaction that this may be mistaken. I remember reading something a few years ago expressing concern about Japan out manuevering the U.S. in investment and business dealings in China. If anyone has any comparative figures or could point us to some it would be appreciated.

Thanks for getting me thinking...even though its 7 a.m. here and I am still on my forst cup.

Best,
Stitch
