Gary,
Cost vs performance. It addresses the 3D hype that Intel has been living off of. Granted, it does not have the raw FPU power of the Pentium II but it does enhance the instructions that are needed for 3D gaming.
Also...
At 333MHz (3.5 x 95) is has close to the Pentium II 400s Winstone 98 score. (24.7 vs 25).
The AMD K6-2-333 will retail for about $250 (best guess) and the Pentium II - 400 is currently about $750. The K6-2-300 is now at $179.
