First Tennessee National Corp. Ranked First in Year 2000 Readiness Report

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1998--First Tennessee National Corp. (NASDAQ/NM:FTEN - news) has earned the top ranking for its Year 2000 readiness in a PaineWebber Financial Services report entitled ''Banks and Y2K.'' PaineWebber reviewed 33 banking companies in nine categories of Year 2000 preparedness including percentage of project completeness, testing, vendor dependence/strategy and disclosure. First Tennessee received the highest average, 4.4, of all banks reviewed.

''We're obviously very pleased to rank first in the PaineWebber Y2K report, which included other respected banks like Citicorp, First Union, Wells Fargo and BankAmerica,'' said Jim Mays, First Tennessee Year 2000 project administrator. ''Our first-place ranking reinforces our message to our customers that First Tennessee places their needs and concerns at the top of our 'to-do' list. We have a major team effort throughout the company addressing Year 2000 issues. Our goal remains that Jan. 1, 2000, will be like any other New Year's Day at First Tennessee.''

First Tennessee began its Year 2000 project planning in 1995. Changes in First Tennessee's systems to achieve Year 2000 compliance are proceeding as planned, with a scheduled completion date of December 1998.

Seems like we only hear from companies that are ahead of the game. It took over three years to complete! Sure hope all companies are well under way with remediation. Somehow I don't think they are.
