Last year, there was a survey in a 'leading consumer magazine' that rated Gateway #1 in service of all leading PC vendors, (Dell was second). I agree with you that being number 1 doesn't mean a lot if #1 isn't satisfactory; but at least with GTW, you do have several options.... I have a Dell at home; and the horror stories I have mean I will never buy another Dell again as a consumer (different story in the context of a corporate buyer, though).

As for whether or not GTW is a buy, I'm on the fence. Lofty PE ratios for both Dell and GTW make me very cautious.

jcs, tippet and i see all the profits in the box maker business disappearing shortly. no way would either of us buy a long term position in this stock. good luck. i'm waiting for a pop over 450 to buy some leaps on this bow wow stock (don't know a lot about the individual characteristics of this company other than management isn't, shall we say, "up front."
