hi chuzzle,

thanks for the post..

here's a post on momentum:

Momentum

A. Definition

Momentum is simply the difference in prices over a period of time. Momentum
is defined as the current settlement price minus the settlement price of n days ago.
That positive or negative price difference is plotted around a zero line.

The general formula for momentum is:

Mn = P - Pn where:

P is the latest settlement price
Pn is the settlement price of n-days ago

The momentum line behaves in the following ways:

When the line is above zero:
- a rising line means the uptrend is getting stronger
- a level line means the uptrend is holding steady
- a falling line means the uptrend is fading

When the line is equal to zero:
- the trend is exactly sideways

When the line is below zero:
- a falling line means the downtrend is getting stronger
- a level line means the downtrend is holding steady
- a rising line means the downtrend is fading

B. Trading Uses

Momentum can be used as a technical indicator in much the same way as the
moving average oscillator is used. It can be used for identifying trends,
overbought/oversold conditions and divergences. Again, the parameter used for the
momentum indicator depends on a trader's time frame and the optimal value for a
particular market.

Momentum can be used for trend identification by noting the direction of the
line (e.g., rising line, bullish trend), the speed at which the line is rising or falling
(e.g., steep rising line, very bullish trend), and the momentum line's cross-over of the
zero level (e.g., a shifting trend).

Please define exactly what you mean by momentum. In physics it is mass times
velocity. In Dell I thought we saw big increases in volume and prices.

Top Cat,

Stock prices are the result of investors perceptions. If those perceptions are at variance with reality the price of the stock moves substantially. Obviously, some investors had unreasonable expectations about Dell's earnings, and when earnings were reported they were disappointed, and sold.

Agree. The investors' perceptions of the fundamentals was at variance with reality. IMO some investors did expect more stellar earnings, and probably some expected a stock split announcement at this time. I have no way of judging how much this or similar threads may have contributed to a split expectation or to heightened earnings expectations, but I think it safe to say 'somewhat'. Additionally, momentum investors may well have decided to sell, take the run-up profits, and move their money to a different arena temporarily. The momentum players will probably be back in August.
