John, wrt your alma mater, sorry. Yes, Yale, still in New England though.

WRT where are the applications for Merced ,wherever you see a workstation or server today that runs most (all?) flavors of 64 bit UNIX based aps, you'll be able to swap in a Merced based one. A lot of those aps I mentioned before, like movie making, run UNIX. How about CAD? The auto design or rocket emulation didn't turn you on? 64 bit NT will take longer, as Microsoft is doing the software for that now. Looking at it from another perspective, essentially all of the computer companies into medium to large servers today are making plans for Merced based machines. IBM, HP, Dell, Compaq, Fujitsu, Amdahl, Sequent, Bull...just to name a few. A line from a Dire Straits tune: these guys ain't dumb.

No offense intended (already did with U. Maine vs. Yale) but sometimes I think posts asking who in the he** is going to buy that chip Intel has in mind are made just to taunt people like Paul and me. OTOH, if there were a thread on Mechanical Engineering, I'd be somewhat clueless, even though I manage ME as well as other stuff. Again, no offense.

Speaking of Yale, ever get down to Morie's (is it?)?

Regards,

Tony
