Well, it sounds like our flus were mirror images of each other. I already had broncial stuff and the grumpy achies, and it has turned into tummy trouble. Yes, isn't mandatory VOLUNTARY labor the very best thing? Especially for nasty smokers who are inconsiderate as well. Who really cares about oxymorons when perverted partakers of the filthy weed can be made the victims of their own lack of fresh air? I say it's poetic justice!!!! ;^) Now, on a more serious note, alcoholism is a complicated issue. While American Indians and the Irish have a genetic propensity for alcoholism, and often do lose control immediately after they begin drinking, the only way any alcoholic can stop drinking is to enter treatment and work hard to get well. So regardless of the cause, there is a lot of personal responsibility necessary to get well. I am simply sympathetic to alcoholics, because of the genetic propensity and also because alcoholics are often self medicating for psychic pain inflicted on them when they were children. I also think smokers who are unable to quit often have similar psychological issues, and would certainly extend the same degree of compassion to them, as well. But when they are in-your-face polluters of the air of nonsmokers, acting without due consideration for the rights of those around them, it is a little hard to feel very sorry for them. And I think a huge amount of energy that could be put into quitting--especially with the new prescription drug available, and more intensive quitting programs at the Mayo Clinic--goes instead into pugnacious, obnoxious rebellion. Some of them almost have a persecution complex, and I don't think that is a very positive emotional state. They see people who ARE concerned about the public health, clean air, and the next generation, as simply trying to legislate their freedoms away, when I don't believe that is the case at all. For example, I don't think anyone has suggested that they cannot smoke at home, in their cars, or in public--away from anyone else who might breathe their smoke. Hmmm . . . there was a coherent point to this post, and it is that, according to a recent study, alcoholics and smokers are much more likely to have been abused children:dailynews.yahoo.com
