Could you be thinking of AST? I think they were taken over by NEC.

John, an aqaintance of mine bought an AST P-60, right when the Pentium first came out. It had the most moronic Win95 shell called "Navigator"...completely hid Explorer.. I showed him how to remove the shell and replace it with Explorer..had to go to sys.ini if I remember right. He was amazed, because he hadn't known Win95 Explorer even existed prior to that...He felt like AST had done him a disservice.
