Jim,

One thing I find astonishing when walking into nursing homes is that one can literally cut the air with a knife, the smoke is that heavy. Many of those oldsters still smoke their tobacco and live in reasonable health, all things considered.

I am also aware of the ones you referenced in your post. A darkly funny book you might enjoy reading on that subject is "The House of God" by Samuel Shem, M.D. Despite its title, the book is not about religion.
