The "average" waitperson doesn't work at he Marriot but in some little coffee shop somewhere. And they don't bring in the big bucks. And the bartender at the local bar doens't get tipped like the guy at the Marriot either. The people I met in waitressing, that weren't college students, were uneducated and without skills. Some were bright, some not. But most people are not waitressing because when they were little they always dreamed of growing up to be a waitress. And aside from the movie Cocktail bartending is a pretty creepy profession as well. I didn't meet many happy bartenders as a cocktail waitress. I did meet a lot of surly or maudlin drunks though, which really made up for the aching feet and all the butt pinching.

Just out of curiosity how much waitressing did you or Jim ever do? Ever work in a bar? And what nursing home lets people smoke outside of their rooms? None that I know of and I have been in 15 in the last few months. Some were completely non-smoking because they had so many respiratory cases and so much oxygen around.
